We spent two days last week in management training. As a firm, we had decided that we were under invested in this area. It was a great two days. There are many things that I could comment on but I thought I would only touch on a few of my “AHA!” moments. It is an interesting journey that I have embarked on.
Feedback is neither positive or negative, it is only information. I get to choose how to feel about it and how to use it. Often, we don’t give team members feedback that helps them build on their instincts. Rather, we give them feedback that makes them more like oneself.
In many of my meetings with clients, I hear the lament “Why can’t I find good people?" Ask yourself instead, “Why would good people want to work for me?” It comes down to how we communicate feedback, instruction, encouragement- the overall vision for our companies. They need the answers to these three questions:
- What is expected from me?
- How am I doing?
- What’s in it for me or why should I?
People today do not have to fit in to your environment since there is one out there that will fit them.
As a leader, I am responsible for the “Emotional Well-being” of my team.
